They are usually open at 11 am, so I agree with Eric, they are probably out of town. On the other hand, I recommend making the effort to go back. The food is excellent and the family is very congenial.
The best Vietnamese I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot. Get the pho and a meatball or pate bahn mi with extra meat. The owner’s wife is usually cooking and she’s incredible. The owner is usually serving. He’s the sweetest guy and he’ll give you tips on how to beat enjoy the food. It made me excited about Vietnamese food 10 years ago and when I returned to STL after a 5 year absence I was ecstatic to see the owners still there and the food was just as delicious as when I had first tried it. God Bless this place and its owners.
Amazing vegetarian/vegan fare. You gotta try the Joey B if you are in the mood for a vegetarian sandwich, I recommend extra 'meat.' Crepes are outstanding as well. Service will take a while, be prepared to wait. It's not the nicest ambiance and they don't have a soda machine, but the food is worth it.
Great food, good price, good veggie options, minority owned. Support this delicious restaurant.
Banh Mi So translated must mean heaven, because this food is out of this world good. I had pork spring rolls and spicy beef soup that were to die for. I'm so glad a local recommended this place!!!! They have a larger beer called Tiger that was really good as well. I highly recommend this place.
Went in at opening 11 a.m. Older gentleman very nice seemed to be all alone. Ordered Beef pho and spicy beef soup with vermicelli noodles, and an order of egg rolls. We also ordered a sandwich to go. Egg rolls took 30 min to arrive they were soaked in oil and the wrapping was so loose it fell apart at first bite. The oil was obviously old because they were very dark. The soups arrived 20 minutes later. Old condiments on the table along with old bean sprouts were brought out. The pho was bland the spicy beef was sweet not spicy. The sandwich was the most disappointing. Barely had any filling! One piece of meat very little veggies. It was as light as a feather! The bread was the only redeeming quality. All in all if I could give 0 stars I would.
Absolutely delicious. The environment is very cute and comforting. A great mom n pop restaurant. There are plenty of vegan options and the mung bean spring rolls are a delicacy. Definitely bring something to do or have a lot to talk about with your company because it will be a little bit of a wait, but well worth it
This is a family-owned and family-run restaurant. The wife is in charge of the kitchen and cooks all meals while the husband takes care of the dinning room area. Last time I was there, it was just the two of them running the whole place so don't be surprised if there is a long wait involved but I can assure you it will be 100% worth it. Best pho and spring rolls I've ever tried. They have the freshest ingredients and most tasty food. We talked with the owner and he goes to the market himself every morning to buy fresh produce. Prices are very reasonable and portions are very good size. If wait time is a concern I would suggest not going during a peak time.
They claim to have the best Spring Rolls in the city. They are good, but then I'm still working on comparing the other SE Asian restaurants in the city.
Food was alright for the price. I've had better Vietnamese food
Absolute best Vietnamese food. Always eat here when I’m in town. Love that it is family owned.
Fantastic food and great for vegans!! I think in the past month I've visited about 8 times. Mung bean spring rolls and the 09v vegan beef soup are my favorite :)
Absolutely delicious & affordable. Lots of tasty vegan options. I highly recommend the vegan spicy "beef" noodle soup & the crispy fried crepes! Will definitely be back!
This place is the jam. Can't order over the phone very easily from some of the online menus' veiwible over Google because they fill out your order ticket using the number code from their in-store menu. It is amazing food that is worth waiting around for coming in to order takeout or if you're dining in.Sauces come with nearly everything and are an awesome addition to Vietnamese classics. The gate all the way to the left is the only one that is ever unlocked on the fence around the patio so don't be deterred.
It's my favorite restaurant in all of st Louis. Go for yourself and see why!
We LOVE this place! If you haven’t had their Mung Bean Spring Rolls- you are missing out!
Been coming here for years and it's always delicious. The owners are wonderfully friendly and always give great service with their delicious food. One of the best in the city
I enjoyed the mungbean spring roll and the beef noodle soup.
Delicious food and really sweet owners! You cant go wrong here!
Amazing! VEGAN friendly! The food and service was great. The atmosphere was exactly what I like as well, laid back and not too fancy. The owner suggested that I try the mung bean spring rolls instead of the tofu spring rolls that I would usually order. I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure how beans would work in a spring roll. But, he convinced me and I am so glad that he did. There were no loose beans in my spring roll, but instead, a very delicious homemade tofu like substance made from mung beans instead of soy beans. SO GOOD! I'm not sure if anyone else does this, I wish they did. One of the other great things about Banh Mi So 1, is the very vegan friendly menu. Eating actually vegan (or even vegetarian)Vietnamese food can be hard with unknown broths and fish oils, but this place clearly marks on the menu which dishes are vegan or can be made vegan! Thank you Banh Mi So 1, for becoming my new favorite spot in St. Louis for Vietnamese food!
One of the undiscovered gems in So St Louis City! The vegan crepes are Divine; the fresh-grown on site herbs, and homemade soy sauce are Ambrosial!A true family owned and operated establishment which has been turning out extraordinary fare for decades. The Veggie Ham and Mung Bean over fettuccine, and The Joe B., with extra meat, are particular favorites.
High quality, delicious food found here! The spring rolls really are the best in STL.
Food subpar. Used to be excellent.
Nicest owner ever! And food is DELISH!❤
Delicious vegan options, the decor leaves a little to be desired, but the food was great!
The food here is delicious! I went with 2 friends and we all shared tastes of each other's dishes and everything was so good! Its authentic and made with love. They do take out too!
Greatest bahn mi at a low price. Has one of my favorite desserts, the sticky green rice cake
Great food, great people - my favorite restaurant in St. Louis!
Always love to eat here when I visit St Louis. Some of the best I've tasted. Good food made with a generous heart.
Pretty good food, not the greatest location. A friendly neighborhood restaurant. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Please like if this review helps you to decide.
This place is an amazing family-owned locale that provides amazing hand-made meticulously curated food at a great price. Dewey, the son of the owners is the best server. This is perhaps my favorite restaurant. I tend to categorize, but every time I go there I'm so satisfied and happy it's ridiculous. Their sandwiches and apps are bloody amazing. And the atmosphere is so chill. It's wonderful.
Very friendly staff. Can't get enough of the mung bean spring rolls! Also enjoy the vegetarian tofu entrees.
Best Vietnamese food I ever had! Don't be fooled by the modest place, it' s a must. The Ice coffee is out of this world.
Amazing placeAmazing foodAmazing and friendly staffOrder anything curry and you won’t be disappointed!! Also try the mung bean spring rolls. I could eat those everyday 💜
YES. The mung bean spring rolls? Excellent. The sandwiches? Wonderful and CHEAP. The service? Good. Very kind.
Great place. Family owned.
Awesome chicken spring rolls the 💣
First and foremost, the food directly reflects the love and passion that the owner possesses. Everytime that we have visited here, he comes to our table and tell us about his life and how hard he has worked to obtain what he has. This man works harder than anyone I have ever met in my life. He has a passion for his food and for those that choose to consume it. Much love to this place and that man. I am honored to exist on the same planet as him.
My favorite Vietnamese place in St. Louis. Amazing spring rolls and the vermicelli bowls are so good! The owner is super nice and friendly too
Delicious food. The owner is a sweet heart as well as the staff. Family owned business with tons of vegan friendly options!! A must try in South city.
We ordered beef pho (#9) and spicy beef soup (#12). The spicy beef soup was much better than the pho, definitely would return for spicy beef soup (not pho). It was not hot spicy just very flavorful and completely different broth than the pho.
Not only the best (and most affordable) bánh mì thịt in St. Louis, but some of the best BREAD in the area, too. Crunches and cracks when you bite into it, with ingredients that are incredibly fresh.
Amazing! My boyfriend and I love this place! The mung bean spring rolls are a must; I love the pho with “beef” (I usually don’t go for fake meat but this is exceptional), and my boyfriend likes the “ham”. The owner/waiter is very friendly!
Love Bahn Mi So! Options for Vegan, Vegetarian, Lactose free, Gluten Free! And options for all combined! Caution there are many nuts (tree nuts) but also you can ask for without, went with a friend who has nut allergies we were very carefully but it all went well and she had no reactions. Woo-hoo!
Good food, but the customer service has really gone down. We used to love this place when we lived in St Louis. So much so, that when we went back, we wanted to make it our place to have a friend's dinner. Unfortunately, their new policy is that if you have more than 4 people, you have to make a reservation and order everything for the table when you make the reservation. Since we had several couples meeting us, we couldn't do that. We showed up to an empty dining room where the owner, in a very impatient and salty tone, told us of the policy. He very impatiently accommodated us until there were more than 4. Then, since we couldn't order for everyone else coming, he agreed that we should leave. Very sad that we will not be going back there. It used to be one of the highlights of our trip.
A must try place! My friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant and we were treated to some heartwarming stories from the owner while we ate very delicious food. I appreciated the variety of vegetarian and vegan foods.
This is one of our favorite places, ever. Amazing vegan options! Favorites: spring rolls... the tofu and the mung bean are both delicious. The vegan egg rolls are another favorite. Highly recommend the vegan Joe B sandwich, the vegan pho, vegan spicy beef and vegan curry. I'm sure everything else is wonderful as well but we have a hard time ordering new things since we we love our favorites so much.
Love this place! Go for the mung bean rolls and pho. Ask for the house made fish sauce too.
Great service and delicious! Especially wonderful vegetarian and vegan options. I recommend the mung bean spring rolls and vegetarian faux mean bahn mi (extra meat). The owner is very sweet. We will be back!
Amazing soup and spring rolls and everything.
Honestly so incredible with cheap prices. A humble family-owned and run business. Love this place!
